There are multiple causes for female hair loss. In order to determine the exact cause, a detailed history and physical exam is necessary. Laboratory tests are also helpful to determine the cause, and on occasion, biopsies of the scalp may need to be performed.
The most common cause is androgenetic alopecia, also known as hereditary hair thinning, and this is just gradual shrinkage of the hair follicle. Other causes include thyroid disorders, low iron, low vitamin D, and anemia. On occasion there are scarring conditions of the scalp that can cause hair loss.
It's important to determine the exact cause because these conditions are treated differently. Androgenetic alopecia is treated with medical and surgical options including hair transplants, whereas scarring conditions are treated with medications and these patients generally are not candidates for a hair transplant.
