Facelift Myths: What Is True? By Sahar Nadimi on November 26, 2021

As people age they start to notice subtle changes in their appearance. The first signs of aging usually develop in the face, where wrinkles, creases, and sagging skin create an aged and worn down appearance. A facelift addresses signs of aging along the lower face and neck to provide a more revitalized and youthful aesthetic.

Facelift surgery has a reputation for providing safe and effective results, but there are also a lot of myths and misunderstandings about this procedure. Here, Dr. Sahar Nadimi addresses common facelift myths so that our Chicago, IL, patients are well prepared for what to expect from a facelift procedure.

A Facelift Will Make Me Look Unnatural

This is probably the most widespread myth about facelift surgery. Many people fear that a facelift will lift and tighten their skin unnaturally, creating a windswept or cartoonish appearance. When facelift surgery was first introduced, it did address only the top layer of skin, which sometimes led to unnatural-looking results. However, the facelift techniques used today are far more advanced.

When performing facelift surgery for her Chicago patients, Dr. Nadimi does more than just remove excess tissues so that the skin can be lifted and redraped. She also makes alterations to the underlying muscular structure. By tightening and repositioning facial muscles, Dr. Nadimi is able to lift and define facial features to provide attractive and natural looking results.

Only Women Have a Facelift

Men are just as invested in their appearance as women, but they often feel embarrassed to look into facelift surgery, because they think it is geared towards women. Facelift surgery is actually very popular among men. And facelift surgery is completely customizable, so men do not have to worry that their face will look feminine after treatment. We can address loose, saggy skin and smooth out wrinkles while maintaining a masucline jawline.

I’m Too Young for a Facelift

Many people think you have to be a certain age to undergo facelift surgery. Physical age should not have an impact on when someone chooses to have facelift surgery. Everyone develops signs of aging at their own rate. If the skin has lost its elasticity, facial features are drooping, and/or deep lines and creases are present, you are likely an ideal candidate for facelift surgery, regardless of your age.

Dermal Fillers Can Provide the Same Results as a Facelift

Facelift surgery is an invasive procedure that requires an extensive recovery. It is completely understandable that people may prefer a less invasive treatment option, such as dermal fillers. However, it is a myth that dermal fillers can provide the same results as a facelift. Dermal fillers can smooth out wrinkles and fill out sunken facial features, but they do not address the underlying muscular structure. And the results of dermal filler treatment only last for a few months, unless treatment is repeated.

Facelift Results Last Forever

Facelift surgery provides long-lasting results – much longer than those of dermal fillers – but our Chicago patients should understand that surgical results do not last forever. After facelift treatment the body continues to age and the facial skin continues to be exposed to harsh environmental elements. Facelift surgery reverses and stalls the effects of aging, but over time, new signs of aging will develop.
