Eyebrow Transplant Candidates
Hair transplant surgery has enabled many people to successfully fill in a thinning hairline to restore volume. Thanks to advanced surgical techniques, which allow for the transfer of singular follicular units, hair transplant surgery is no longer just for the head. Hair transplant surgeons at the Chicago Hair Institute also offer eyebrow transplants. Eyebrow transplantation takes individual hairs from the back of the head and uses them to fill in sparse or over plucked eyebrows.
Here, our hair transplant surgeons discuss the types of characteristics that make someone an ideal eyebrow transplant candidate at our Chicago, IL, hair clinic.
Cause of Thin Eyebrows
One of the most important factors when considering eyebrow transplant candidacy is the cause of hair loss. If eyebrows are sparse due to genetic conditions, over plucking, or injury, hair transplant surgery is likely to be a viable solution. In these situations, transplanted hair follicles should successfully take to the transplant site and lead to reliable hair growth in the area.
While many of the most common causes of thin eyebrows should respond to hair transplant treatment, there are some conditions that could exclude someone from being an eyebrow transplant candidate. For instance, if the eyebrows have thinned as a result of alopecia areata or frontal fibrosing alopecia, transplant surgery may not be as successful. Alopecia causes the immune system to attack hair follicles, resulting in bald patches or complete hair loss. Since this condition could compromise treatment results, our surgeons have to consider eyebrow transplant candidacy on a case-by-case basis.
Substantial Donor Site
Another consideration for eyebrow transplant candidacy is whether or not the patient has a substantial donor site. Our surgeons cannot collect (and transplant) hair follicles if there are no healthy hair follicles remaining. Fortunately, this is usually not a problem for our Chicago patients. Even if someone suffers from hair loss or baldness on the scalp, most retain some hair growth at the back of the head. And since we use follicular unit extraction, hair follicles are collected individually, which means that donor hairs can be successfully collected even if patients only have a relatively small donor site.
Overall Health
When determining candidacy for any surgical procedure, the patient’s overall health must be taken into consideration. Eyebrow transplant surgery is minimally invasive and carries little risk of complication. Still, patients must be in generally good health to be considered ideal candidates for this elective procedure. As long as the patient has no serious health problems that would significantly increase the danger of hair transplant surgery, they should be cleared for treatment.
Realistic Expectations
Prior to undergoing eyebrow transplant surgery, patients should have realistic expectations regarding treatment results. Our surgeons consult with each patient to discuss their specific concerns and treatment goals. It is important that we understand what our patients are looking for, and that they understand whether their goals can be fully achieved through eyebrow transplantation.
