The Benefits of Dense-Pack Grafting By Dr. Raymond Konior on April 18, 2017

Benefits of Dense-Pack GraftingYour hair density is affected by more than the number of follicles in an area. Your hair color and type can also impact the appearance of hair density. At Chicago Hair Institute in Illinois, we look at a number of different factors when determining if a patient is a good candidate for dense-pack grafting. There are numerous benefits of dense-pack grafting, but only if the right patients are selected for the procedure.

What Is Dense-Pack Grafting?

Dense-pack grafting is a process in which the follicular units are placed closer together and in larger numbers to achieve a high-density appearance. Usually, an area is considered densely packed when there are more than 30 to 35 follicular units per square centimeter. While dense-pack grafting does carry some risks - mainly, poor graft survival rate - the procedure can produce great results in the right patients.

Who Is a Good Candidate for this Type of Grafting?

To determine if a patient is a good candidate for dense-pack grafting, we will look a several different factors, including:

  • Density of the donor area
  • The patient’s age
  • Hair color and skin color, hair texture, and curl pattern (if any)
  • Possibility for future hair loss

One of the biggest deciding factors in whether a patient would benefit from dense-pack grafting is the density of the hair in the donor area. If the donor site is also dense, this type of grafting can produce good results. If the donor site is not high in density, it could leave the donor site too thin.

A patient’s age and the potential for future hair loss must also be considered. Dense-pack grafting is not an ideal procedure for a man in his late 30s with a high risk of future hair loss. The procedure would deplete the donor site, leaving little to work with if future transplants are needed.

Finally, in many men, we can achieve the appearance of high density without dense-pack grafting. Men with coarser and curlier hair can achieve a high density appearance with fewer grafts per square centimeter, preserving the donor site.

What Are the Benefits of Dense-Pack Grafting?

For men who are good candidates, dense-pack grafting offers a lot of benefits. Because it takes great skill and precision to perform these types of grafts, patients can feel confident they are getting the best results at Chicago Hair Institute. Additionally, dense-pack grafting involves much smaller incisions, and thus, less trauma.

Dense-pack grafting can give patients a fuller head of hair that looks and feels completely natural. As a result, many men begin to feel more confident in their appearance and in themselves. This confidence carries over into their professional and personal lives, which can improve the overall quality of their lives.
