How Soon Will FUE Results Take? By on November 05, 2014

Man with a head of thick, dark hairThinning hair and the development of bald patches is a problem that is experienced by a great number of people. This problem, which is largely due to genetics, is, for the most part, unavoidable. However, there are treatment options for those who wish to restore a fuller, thicker head of hair. One popular hair transplant treatment option is follicular unit extraction, which allows for the harvesting and transplanting of individual hair follicles. This alternate treatment to the traditional strip harvesting method offers patients a quick recovery and effective results. Many of our Chicago patients question how long it takes for FUE results to be visible. While each patient’s experience is slightly different, the typical timeline for FUE results can be found below.

One to Two Weeks after Transplantation

Within one to two weeks after surgery, the side effects of an FUE transplant (such as bruising and swelling) should no longer be visible. While most people feel comfortable being seen in public at this point without a hat or covering, patients should not expect to see anything in terms of new hair growth at this point. In fact, it is typical for the hair that was transplanted to begin to fall out during this time frame. However, patients can rest assured that the follicles remain in place and will eventually result in the growth of new hair.

Three to Four Months after Transplantation

Within three to four months after FUE treatment, many patients begin to notice the growth of new hair. These are just the early results of treatment, so patients should not feel frustrated if the hair is not yet as long or thick as they would desire. Once new hair begins to grow, it will continue to do so, creating more obvious results over time.

Six to Twelve Months After Transplantation

The majority of patients will notice substantial hair growth and more significantly visible results of FUE treatment within six to 12 months after transplantation. In most cases patients can expect to reach around 80 percent of hair growth potential around six months, with growth continuing until the final results of treatment are apparent around 12 months. However, each patient is different and some continue to notice significant growth and change between 12 months and 24 months after surgery.

While FUE is an effective solution for hair loss, it is not a procedure that offers immediate results. While it may be difficult, patients will have to be patient regarding how long it takes for hair growth to be visible. If a patient is six months into recovery and still does not feel satisfied with the results they are seeing from treatment, our doctors will be happy to discuss these concerns and answer any additional questions they may have.
